In their final tune up game before district play starts Monday, the Gainesville Lady Leopards produced one of their best offensive outings of the season with a 17-2 wins over the Muenster Lady Hornets in four innings Friday at NCTC’s Darwin Fields.

The Lady Hornets took an early 2-0 after the first inning thanks to an RBI hit by Jadi Abner that plated Jackie Klement.

Abner later scored from third on a passed ball at home plate.

But from there it was all Lady Leopards, who scored 17-unanswered runs while pitcher Sarah Gerken did not allow another hit the rest of the way to help improve Gainesville’s record to 5-11 on the season.

Gerken finished with eight strikeouts while allowing just two runs, one earned, on one hit for the win.

Gainesville pounded out 13 hits off of opposing pitcher Taylor Klement, who finished with four strikeouts while allowing 17 runs (13 earned).

Tiffany Griffith began the Lady Leopards scoring run in the second inning with an RBI single to score Gerken, who reached base on one of Muenster’s eight errors in the game.

Griffith later scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Shanece Manuel, her first of three RBIs in the game.

With the bases loaded, Taylor Murphy and Shelby Brewer each recorded back-to-back walks, which scored Manuel and Megan Gonzales. Briana Munoz followed with an RBI single that scored lead-off hitter Laura Dhane to give Gainesville a 5-2 lead heading into the third.

The Lady Leopards kept the runs pouring in with seven in the third inning to take a 12-2 lead.

Manuel plated Griffith with an RBI double while Murphy later followed with a 2-run double that scored Gonzales and Manuel.

After Brewer reached on an error by the Muenster outfield, Munoz skipped a shot past the infield and a series of throwing errors allowed both Brewer and Munoz to score. Madyson Bond followed with a single. Gerken followed and skipped a shot into the outfield, but another error by the Lady Hornets’ defense allowed Bond to score on the play to give the Lady Leopards a 10-run lead after three innings.

After another quick inning for Muenster in the top of the fourth, the Lady Leopards scored five more runs to mercy rule their opponent.

Gonzales led off the inning with a single. Manuel followed with an RBI double to score Gonzalez. Manuel then scored off a single by Dhane to push Gainesville’s lead to 14-2.

Murphy later reached base thanks to an error while Danielle Trewin punched a single into left field to bring up Munoz, who finished 2 for 4 at the plate with four RBIs.

Munoz smashed a shot down the third base line that scored both Murphy and Trewin. Hustling around the basepaths, Munoz scored on the play for a game-ending, inside-the-park home run.

At the plate for Gainesville, Murphy finished with two runs scored and three RBI, Gonzalez was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and Manuel was 2 for 3 with three runs scored an three RBI.

Dhane, Brewer and Trewin each finished with one hit, a run scored and an RBI while Griffth added one hit with two runs scored and Bond had one hit and a run scored.

The Lady Leopards begin district play at 5 p.m. Monday at Whitesboro. They then follow that game up with a game at Sanger at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
