Lady Hornets tussle with Irion County

MUENSTER — Today is the day the Muenster Lady Hornets try to get over the hump.

After falling in the regional semifinal of the Region II tournament last year, the Muenster Lady Hornets are trying to live by their motto: “It’s time.”

As in, it’s time for the Lady Hornets to take that next step and hopefully bring a Class A Division I state championship trophy to Muenster.

But first they must tussle with Irion County, who squeaked past Meridian 49-47 on Wednesday. It was the third time the two teams played as they both are in the same district.

Meridian was the district champ while Irion County finished as the runner-up.

Muenster (27-6) handed Tolar a 67-50 loss in Jacksboro Tuesday. The Lady Hornets had all facets of the game working in their favor as the team hit quick 3-pointers, made open shots in the paint, converted free throws and forced rushed shots on the defensive end.

Three players were in double figures in the game, something Muenster Coach Jason Atcheson noted was key for his team to make a run toward a championship.

Shaina Felderhoff led the way with 20 points while Taylor Klement added 16. Lana Heers scored 14 points in the win, including 4 for 4 from beyond the arc.

Irion County has had quite the run in the postseason as a runner-up. First, it defeated Evant 71-65 in bi-district play, then played a close contest against Mart, winning that area round game by only three points (58-55).

Muenster, as the district 10-A champion, has played one-less game thanks to a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

The Lady Hornets opened the area round with a 63-39 win over Albany.

Tip-off for today’s regional semifinal is slated for 6 p.m. at Abilene Christian University.

The winner of today’s game faces the winner of Seymour and Goldthwaite in the Region II final on Saturday. Tip-off of that game is slated for 4 p.m.
