Wellness expo promotes preventative healthcare

Gainesville — Hundreds of wellness-minded patrons flooded Gainesville Civic Center Thursday for the “Healthy, Happy & Whole Expo,” sponsored chiefly by Select Energy Services, Gainesville Daily Register and ArmourGuard.

More than 70 vendors of healthcare products and services treated visitors to information and products related to personal maintenance — an d 15 of the booths specialized in health screenings on the spot.

Visitors had opportunities for assessments of bone density, blood pressure, diabetic risk, oral cancer risk, skin cancer risk, hearing deficiency, depression risk, physical fitness and cholesterol levels, among others.

The local expo began in 2011, and the response was such that organizers found reason to repeat their success.

“We’ve done very well,” Stacey Watson of Hometown Pharmacy said Thursday. “We’ve had an excellent turnout and it’s better than last year.

Muenster Memorial Hospital Marketing Director Adelia Wilson, whose hospital wasn’t represented during the 2011 installment, admitted she was surprised at the crowd.

“Everybody’s getting their blood pressure checked and their flu shots and getting information,” Wilson said, adding that the organizers often benefit as much from the expo as visitors do. “It’s one of the best ways to get our name out there, especially among our peers.

We learn more from each other, and we all collaborate and share information, and so it’s good.”
