More than 1,000 expected for this year's Zoo Boo

Gainesville — Parents who are looking for a safe Halloween event for their children have a resource in “Zoo Boo,” Frank Buck Zoo’s annual fall festival.

This year’s installment is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday on zoo grounds, and tickets will still be available during the event.

The event, which generally draws more than 1,000 visitors, is geared toward younger local children who are still interested in events such as trick-or-treating — and gives them the opportunity to come dressed in their Halloween costumes and see the a different side of the zoo.

“Zoo Boo is a family-friendly, non-scary event that families can bring their children to for Halloween,” Zoo director Susan Kleven said in 2011. “It is the only evening event that I can think of that we have for children. It is a different atmosphere here at night and, of course, non-scary.”

During Zoo Boo, the park display will include different themed locations, she said. Themes this year include a pirate theme, a “non-scary” grave yard, a pumpkin patch, a Dr. Seuss area and a “Jungle Book” area.

Special event admission for the night is $6 for adults and $8 for children between ages 1 and 18.

Advanced tickets will be sold anytime of the day from the parks open at 10 a.m. on Oct. 29. If representatives of nonprofit groups, service clubs or organizations would like to sponsor a treat station during Zoo Boo, contact Zoo Director Susan Kleven at Skleven@cogtx.org.
