Gainesville —
Cooke County commissioners tributed the local branch of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the 100-year anniversary of its Family and Consumer Science program during Monday’s regular meeting.
The regular meeting — which preceded a trio of departmental budget hearings expected to span through late Wednesday — included a proclamation by County Judge John Roane and buffet reception in the county extension office.
Through the proclamation reading, Roane credited the extension service’s Family and Consumer Science program, which began locally in 1912, and thrived through program representative Edna Westbrook Trigg.
The program, he said, was crucial in the initial outreach from the state government to educate rural families with the latest information about farming, gardening and health.
“Home demonstration agents started clubs across Texas to involve more women in bringing household-related skills and information to more rural families,” he said. “Through the first half of the 20th Century, these home demonstration agents went to homes throughout rural Texas.”
Other meeting highlights:
— Commissioners approved interlocal agreements between Cooke County and the cities of Valley View and Muenster, allowing county resources to be used for road maintenance in those two cities. The approval is required when separate taxing entities become coordinated in public works projects.
— Commissioners filed the Cooke County Appraisal District’s preliminary 2012-13 budget of $987,429.
— Commissioners approved the Cooke County Investment Policy.
