Leadership camp helps students target careers

Register Staff Writer

Around 40 Cooke County middle school students participating in a leadership summer camp toured North Central Texas College (NCTC) today and listened to presentations made by several departments detailing career opportunities for future consideration.

The camp, sponsored by NCTC, the University of North Texas, and the Gainesville Independent School District gave students the chance to ask questions of department heads and instructors in finding out more about their individual area of interest.

Shirley Meek, program coordinator in the cosmetology, esthetics and nail technology department spoke to the students about the various types of nail techniques used today and of the importance of sanitization and cleanliness in the salon.

“Good hygiene is so important and is it better to be cautious and safe,” she said.

NCTC student Anthony Proa, graduating from cosmetology in August, plans to go to work in Denton close to his home.

“I have had several career options in my life including the military but I really love what I am doing now and look forward to starting my career and building a client base in the near future,” Proa said. “I have enjoyed my tenure at NCTC and would encourage any of these kids to choose this program to pursue their dream in cosmetology.”

Other departments participating in the camp were oil and gas technology, nursing, drama, horticulture and biology.

Following the visit to NCTC, the students are set to travel to Texas Christian University and the University of Texas at Arlington.
