Cooke County —
Early voting in the Nov. 6 general election begins Monday, Oct. 22, and spans through Nov. 2.
Officials have designated the first-floor commissioners courtoom of the Cooke County courthouse for local early voting. During the 11-day voting timeframe, participants can visit the courtroom between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
But potential voters have only until Tuesday to register to vote on Nov. 6. Those already registered are not required to register again. But voters who have moved are urged to submit a voter registration application with their change of address to avoid delays on voting day. And younger voters who turn 18 years of age on or before Nov. 6, are eligible to vote and should submit registration applications.
Cooke County Tax Assessor-Collector Billie Jean Knight is also serving as the county’s voter registrar during this election year.
Residents may register in person at her office at 212 E. California St. in Gainesville.
Applications are available in both English and Spanish. In-person applications must be received in Knight’s office by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Applications are also available at post offices and can be submitted by U. S. Mail. However, those mailed applications must be clearly postmarked no later than Oct. 9, 2012.
After submitting applications, citizens will receive their voter registration certificates in the mail. Their voting precinct is printed on the certificate, and they should take the certificate along when they go to vote. If they don’t receive the certificate or if they misplace it, they can show their Texas driver’s license or other acceptable form of identification to the election clerk. More information about acceptable forms of identification can be found on www.votetexas.gov.
For more information about local voting, call the county clerk’s office at (940) 668-5420 or visit the office in person.
