Gainesville — A suspect in the aggravated assault of Eric Trout, 32, was taken into custody Friday afternoon after turning himself in at the Gainesville Police Department station.

Vernon Lee Davis, 29, submitted himself to custody at 4 p.m. Friday following the issue of an arrest warrant.

He is now in jail in connection with an early-morning incident on July 21, on the property of Home Depot, 804 E. Highway 82 in Gainesville.

At around 5 a.m. that morning, Gainesville police officers responded to an assault report and found Trout lying in the parking lot of the store. He had been severely beaten with a baseball bat.
