Appointments fill council meeting

Gainesville — Tuesday’s regular Gainesville City Council meeting began with the appointment of an incoming council member and included appointments to six other civic positions.

Senior 235th District Court Judge Jerry Woodlock read an oath of office to Keith Clegg, who was appointed to the position of Ward 3 council member as a replacement for Phillip Neelley. Neelley has changed residences and will no longer reside in his ward, thus becoming ineligible to maintain the council position.

Clegg has also served on the Gainesville Economic Development Corporation and the Gainesville ISD Board of Directors and will serve Gainesville City Council until the next regular election of officers on May 11, 2013.

Other meeting actions:

• Council authorized City Manager Barry Sullivan to issue public notice and request for bids for lease of 9.14 acres of land known as Locke Field in the B. F. Carpenter Survey.  The approval allows the city to go through the process of request for proposals and public hearings for use of the area.  Voters approved for the city to lease this land in the election held on May 8, 2010.

• Council authorized City Attorney Belvin Harris to institute condemnation and eminent domain proceedings — if necessary — against the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company in order to acquire 3.26 acres of land situated in the A. Boutwell Survey.  The land is located south of Highway 82 along the frontage of Interstate 35. The city needs to acquire access to the property for future street and utility right of way.

• Council appointed Judy Ann Wheeler to the Gainesville Housing Authority to a term that expires April 2013.

• Council appointed Pam Nickerson to the Keep Gainesville Beautiful Board to a term expiring December 2014.

• Council re-appointed Jess Cason, Tommy Robinson, and Buster Bezner (as alternate) and appointed Neelley (as alternate) to the Building and Standards Commission. All four terms expire May 2014.
