Tonight's Butterfield performance benefits Habitat

Gainesville — Ticket proceeds for this evening’s Butterfield Stage presentation of “The Red Velvet Cake War” are set to directly benefit Gainesville Area Habitat for Humanity — a one-night-only beneficiary format that the theater company regularly allots other nonprofit agencies.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tonight’s ticket money will help Habitat officials complete the interiors on a house near completion at the intersection of Taylor and Pecan streets in Gainesville.

“We’re very blessed that they included us,” Habitat member Molly Worthen said Wednesday.

The 1.5-story Habitat home has had a rocky development spanning back to 2011, with funding, zoning, manpower and family selection problems attached to the process at nearly every turn. Worthen said, however, that the new family has been long selected and the build itself is in the home stretch, with the household possibly set to move in before summer.

“We’re working on the inside and doing the painting,” she said. “The next thing will be moving the cupboard bins. You never know when you’ve got volunteers, so it could be maybe another month or two. The painting is the main thing and then the flooring, and then it will pretty well be finished.”

About the show

“The Red Velvet Cake War” is another comedy by playwright trio Jones, Hope and Wooten and is the prequel to “Rex’s Exes,” a show that had its world premiere at Gainesville’s Butterfield Stage during spring 2012. This most recent production joins a series by those same noted playwrights that was recently presented at Butterfield — including “Dixie Swim Club,” “Dearly Beloved” and “Till Beth Do Us Part.”

The Gainesville “Red Velvet” presentations began last week. Set in Texas, “Red Velvet Cake” is about the trials and tribulations of folks in the community of Sweetgum.

Cast members will include Pam Evans as Cee Cee Windham; Sandy Geyer as Gaynelle Verdeen Bodeen; Kat Guyon as La Merle Verdeen Minshew; Wes Porter as Aubrey Verdeen; Renea Stephens as Jimmy Wyvette Verdeen; Shelley Head as Peaches Verdeen Belrose; Lorena Provencio as Bitsy Hargis; Russell Schmid as Newt Blaylock; Danny Winters as Sheriff Grover Lout; Talina Wilson as Elsa Dowdall; Cecilia Hoening as Mama Doll Hargis; and Danny Nortman as Purvis Verdeen.

The production is directed by Sally Page and shows continue on the Butterfield main stage Friday and Saturday evening.
