GISD board members approve purchases, laud educator

Gainesville — A propane-fueled 29-passenger van was approved for purchase at Monday’s Gainesville Independent School District board meeting.

“At a cost of $62,000, the van will provide multiple uses for the Gainesville ISD at a fuel cost efficiency of 99 cents per gallon,” said Dr. Jeffrey Brasher. Propane rebates will save the district even more money, he added.

The board also approved the purchase of an additional truck for GISD Police and a truck for maintenance. The purchases will be made through Glenn Polk Autoplex in Gainesville. All vehicle costs were covered in the 2013 ISD budget.

The Gainesville ISD recognized Nora Moreno as the GISD teacher of the month. Edison Elementary Principal Sharon Norwood presented a plaque to Moreno.

“Mrs. Moreno is passionate about teaching and making sure her students get what they need to succeed,” Norwood said.

The board discussed the new baseball field that will begin construction next month.

The board chose to name the new baseball field, "Locke Field" which is the same name as the old field.  This name was chosen as part of a verbal agreement with GISD, GEDC, and the City of Gainesville so that the GEDC would donate $200,000 to the construction of the new baseball field.

The idea was to retain some aspect of the old facility with the new.

Following executive session the following district staff members were recommended for employment and or subject to assignment for the 2012-2013 school year: Rita Moriel, Gainesville Independent AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Teacher, Gainesville High School.

Professional personnel recommended for a one year contract during the 2013-2014 school year are: Jennifer Coleman. Vonda McFarlin, April Waggoner and Jim Watson.

Recommended for a two year term contract for the 2013-2015 school year are: Tammy Fuhrmann, David Glancy, Sharon Norwood. Paula Garner, Eric Johns, Paula Moore, Kim Otto and Kim Parsons.

Mr. Marvin White accepted the GMS Assistant Principal's position to replace Matt Willoughby who accepted a similar position in Denton.
