Car ends up inside Muenster Post Office

Muenster — A vehicular mishap at Muenster Post Office on Tuesday afternoon caused no injuries, but creviced the facility’s east wall and damaged nearly 200 mailboxes.

A Muenster Police Department report explained that Leonard William Mize, 91, of Muenster, entered the post office parking lot in his 2007 Lincoln Town Car shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday and failed to stop, hitting an exterior wall. The car smashed through both this wall and an interior wall that housed mailboxes — damaging the boxes and cracking an overhead water line — before stopping in the facility’s work room. The broken water line began a flood that soaked Mize and the immediate area.

The report added that despite the wreck, Mize used his accelerator and spun his tires until office postmaster Leann Hacker rushed to his attention and stopped him. Mize, uninjured, was escorted to a nearby chair until Emergency Medical Services officers checked his condition. His vehicle was towed.

But Wednesday morning, Hacker said the wreck caused havoc with a timeline of repair that may span days.

The exterior wall hole was sealed with particleboard and Metroplex-area postal officials spent the morning assessing the facility.

The car’s impact, however, didn’t ruin any mail in the damaged boxes.

“There’s a security issue,” Hacker said. “We have to contact postal inspectors, and they come out and inspect to make sure we have it secure again to make sure we have no entrance to the building. But we’re able to still give our customers their mail.”
