United Way campaign will help at least 15 local agencies

Cooke County — Through the coming weeks, Cooke County residents have a chance to get involved with the Cooke County United Way 2013 campaign.

The fundraising goal is $398,000, a notch above the $390,000 goal of 2012 — which, itself, was exceeded.

“We have never not made our goal in 56 years,” said Angie Hare, executive director of the local United Way agency.

More than 80 campaign volunteers are set to contact businesses and individuals in reference to campaign fundraising. As in years past, the 2013 proceeds will benefit more than 15 local agencies.

Recent promotional literature for the upcoming campaign provided details about what exactly the benefit agencies do for local beneficiaries, who are often Cooke County children.

And partially due to the successful collection of 2012 funds, Abigail's Arms Family Crisis Center helped 420 clients; the American Red Cross/Texoma Chapter helped 1,546 individuals and families; Boy Scouts/Longhorn Chapter supported 292 youth and Scout leaders; Boys & Girls Club of Cooke County benefited 2,902 youth; Boys Baseball of Cooke County benefited 412 youth; Court Appointed Special Advocates of North Texas helped 92 children; Cooke County Youth Fair spotlighted the work of 510 students; Girl Scouts/Texas Oklahoma Plains, supported 402 youth and leaders; Home Hospice of Cooke County aided in the last wishes of 109 patients; Meals on Wheels/Texas Senior Nutrition served 358 elderly and disabled patients; Muenster Youth Council helped 761 youth participate in related events; Reading and Radio Resource helped 5,964 clients; SW Diabetic Foundation sent 640 youth to Camp Sweeney; Texoma Area Paratransit/TAPS provided 33,266 rides to customers; Texoma Sr. Citizen/Area Agency on Aging helped 636 seniors; and Volunteers In Service To Others (VISTO) helped 10,151 county residents in need.
