Randy Travis arrested in Sanger

Sanger — SANGER — Country singer Randy Travis was arrested Monday morning in Sanger on a charge of suspicion of public intoxication.

Travis, who has a ranch in nearby Tioga, was spotted in front of the First Baptist Church in Sanger with an open bottle of wine, police said.

According to Sanger police, an officer noticed a car parked in front of the church early Monday morning and, thinking that was unusual, made contact with the driver. That is when, according to police, Travis was found with an open bottle of wine. Officers also reported a distinct smell of alcohol.

Denton County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Tom Reedy said Sanger officers took him to Denton, where he was booked into the county jail at 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Travis was released a few hours later.

“They take you to jail for at least four hours, time to sober up,” Reedy explained about the Class C misdemeanor, for which Travis was cited.

Sanger police said Travis was at his girlfriend’s house prior to his arrest.

Travis collapsed last September during a performance at the Huguley Memorial Center's 18th annual Crystal Heart Gala. According to the Burleson Star, the singer was in the middle of singing his hit “Three Wooden Crosses” when he stopped and said something about his vocal cords giving out.

He then reportedly tried to join in again but stopped, stumbled and “pitched forward” onto the front of the stage, witnesses said.

Travis later walked off stage while giving a “thumbs up.” His publicist later said dehydration and over-the-counter allergy medications contributed to the collapse.
