AUSTIN —
The public is invited to Vietnam monument ceremonies in Austin on March 24-25, that will feature appearances by special honor guards and military author Joe Galloway.
Ceremonies for the Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument, honoring all who served in Vietnam, begin Sunday at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin.
Set for 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the first day of events will include a reading of the names of 3,417 Texans who died in the Vietnam War.
The day will also feature an exhibit in the library that displays the hand-stamped dog tags that honor each fallen Texan. Parking and admission are free.
On Monday, March 25 the monument groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on the Texas Capitol grounds with Texan Joe Galloway, author of “We Were Soldiers Once, and Young," as the keynote speaker.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, a Patriot Guard and Combat Veteran Motorcycle honor guard will escort a vintage military vehicle carrying the 3,417 dog tags to the Deep in the Heart Art Foundry in Bastrop.
Following the transport, they will be entombed in a vintage munitions canister within the Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans bronze monument that is being cast in Bastrop. A receiving ceremony at the foundry will include a public viewing of the monument now in production and set to open during the fall. All events are free and open to the public.
