NCTC, Lake Dallas ISD establish collegiate academy

— North Central Texas College recently announced a partnership with the Lake Dallas Independent School District to establish the LDHS Collegiate Academy.

This partnership, which is the first of its kind in North Texas, will enable Lake Dallas High School students to earn a college-level Associate’s degree while still in high school. Students that attend Lake Dallas High School can take up to the 62 hours that are required for an Associate Degree.

This opportunity will give students not only the ability to save money on their undergraduate degree, but deduct years off their degree requirements.

The average cost of 62 hours for an NCTC student is about $6,000, compared to the $4,300 that Lake Dallas ISD students will pay through this partnership. In addition, students that have free or reduced lunches at Lake Dallas High School will enjoy free tuition according to Dr. Emily Klement, Dean over NCTC’s Dual Credit, Graham and Bowie campuses. These students will also have the ability to begin their graduate work up to two years earlier than their counterparts.

Lake Dallas ISD Superintendent Gayle Stinson and NCTC President Dr. Eddie Hadlock signed the Memo of Understanding for the LDHS Collegiate Academy on March 18.

“I want to commend the Lake Dallas Board of Trustees as well as the NCTC administration and community for their vision and future-focused thoughtfulness,” Stinson said. “Our students now have the opportunity of a lifetime with the ability to earn an Associate’s degree simultaneously with their high school diploma. The partnership between our two institutions, the first of its kind in North Texas, is a result of collaborative, engaged schools that care about students. And that's what really matters.”

Dr. Klement also mentioned that students that take full advantage of the LDHS Collegiate Academy and earn an Associate’s degree will be considered transfer students. This should relieve the pressure associated with the needs some students feel to graduate in the top 10 percent of their graduation class.
