Indian Creek VFD hosts first major fundraiser

Cooke County — LAKE KIOWA — A Cooke County rescue agency new to its own community seeks support.

The Indian Creek Volunteer Fire Department’s first annual fundraiser is a two-day event: first with a dinner set for 3 to 7 p.m. April 14, at Lake Kiowa Lodge Pavilion, and then a golf tournament set for the next day at Lake Kiowa’s golf course.

The dinner will include a fish fry, live music, drinks and a live and silent auction; the multi-format tournament will provide prizes and separate shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“It’s golf with several twists,” said tournament organizer Brown McCrory. “It’s an all-day party, to be honest about it.”

Proceeds have been earmarked for the new department’s first major expense of paying off a recently purchased tanker truck for brush fires.

“I do know that this is one of their first things on the ‘want’ list,” McCrory said. “I think they need it before they need much of anything else.”

McCrory added that the all-volunteer department has already received private donations, but $30,000 to $40,000 in profit from the mid-April events will get them where they need to be.

“That’s their first piece of equipment,” he said. “We’re feeling like they need that with the dry conditions and the fact that we’re mostly rural out here. One thing we don’t have is a lot of home fires; it’s mostly brush fires.”

Member Randy Schmaltz said the new tanker truck follows a modified vehicle that he and fellow firemen had temporarily used during the fall, after the department officially formed in October.

He added that the new vehicle is specifically designed for fighting brush fires — a function more important now than during recent cold months.

“Over the winter time, we weren’t expecting much of a fire season,” he said.

The new department provides fire, rescue and emergency services to the Indian Creek fire district, an area formerly served by the Lake Kiowa Volunteer Fire Department.

Schmaltz said that since October, operations have been in fine form.

“I think it’s exceeded the expectations of all of the members,” he said.

Dinner tickets are $20 and golf tournament entry fees are $100 per person and $400 per team.
