'Vanities' coming to Butterfield Stage

Gainesville — Butterfield Stage continues its 2012/2013 season with another high quality, classic production. – “Vanities.”

In 1975, playwright Jack Heifner was an unknown writer unsure of his direction in life when “Vanities” changed everything. He wrote an acting exercise for three women in his theatre company which then opened at the Off- Broadway Chelsea Theater Center's Westside Theatre

The story of three girlfriends in Texas who go from cheerleaders to sorority sisters to independent women turned into a surprise hit that ran for five years and became one of the longest-running comedies in Off-Broadway history.

Now, directed by Butterfields Melissa Karol, this laugh-out-loud comedy comes to Butterfield’s Main Stage Theater. This story of the growth of a friendship among three small town Texas women coming of age in the 1960s and ‘70’s will keep the audience laughing throughout the production.

“Vanities” is a bittersweet comedy that is an astute, snapshot-sharp chronicle of the lives of these three small town girls. This is a timeless production, a story that has been relived time and again throughout the years. The scenario is real; the women are poignant and the experiences are as valid today as they were in the 70’s.

The cast includes Lorena Provencio who played “Bitsy” in the BSP hit “Rex’s Exes. Her career has taken her from productions in the Metroplex, to Las Vegas and California. She has worked in various capacities in operas, musicals and plays.

Alexandria (Alex) Glover is new to BSP but brings with her several years of performance experience in North Texas Theaters.

Adrienne Fleming is a new Gainesville resident, moving recently from Kansas. She has a BA in Fine Arts with a concentration in Musical Theater. She has acted in numerous productions around the country and has taught children’s workshops.

Together, they have formed a “sisterhood” which will thrill and delight Gainesville’s theater patrons.

Parents should note the show ontains adult and mature themes and language which provide insight into the lives and demeanor of young women of that era.

Produced by James and Barbara Barnett, “Vanities” opens Nov. 8 and runs through Nov. 10 and then from Nov. 16 through Nov. 18.
