Gainesville —
County commissioners declined imposing a burn ban during Monday’s regular meeting.
Opinions were divided among officials about the ban — which was suggested by Fire Marshal Ray Fletcher and would have included a set of outdoor burning restrictions. Commissioners Gary Hollowell, Al Smith, B.C. Lemons and Leon Klement declined to vote for it.
But County Judge John Roane, a Valley View resident, recommended the ban and cited declining moisture in certain spots of the county.
“From the feedback I’ve gotten from people in the community, there are some parts of the community that are extremely dry,” he said. “And when we go into a burn ban, it affects the whole community and not just select areas. With that rationale, I suggest a burn ban.”
Officials took no action on the ban, but the agenda item will be part of the next regular meeting.
Other meeting highlights:
• Commissioners approved a letter of resignation from Cooke County Treasurer Judy Hunter, who has retired from the position following 25 years of service. She cited health reasons as the reason for her exit. During Monday’s meeting, she said Assistant Treasurer Patty Brennan will serve in her place until the position is formally filled.
• Commissioners approved a proclamation declaring July 21-28 as “Rodeo Gainesville Week” in promotion of Rodeo Gainesville, set for Friday and Saturday at Gainesville Riding Club. Roane read the proclamation and presented a copy to rodeo organizer Debbie Sicking and riding club members Paige Dill and Jane Martin.
• Commissioners approved these consent agenda items: fiscal year 2012 budget amendments; monthly bills; payroll and related expenses; a renewal of a non-fiduciary agreement between Abigail’s Arms women’s shelter and Cooke County Sheriff’s Office, which provides mutual aid and support to victims of violence; a donation in the amount of $25 to the Cooke County Library (for research) from Donald Tayloe; a donation in the amount of $100 to the Cooke County Library (in memory of Essie McWilliams) from Todd and Lynn McWilliams; a donation in the amount of $14 to the Cooke County Library from Evelyn Thornhill; the 2013 holiday schedule; the annual renewal of the Health Services Agreement between Cooke County and Robert R. McLeroy, M.D., Lake Kiowa Medical Clinic to begin Aug. 11, 2012 thru Aug. 11, 2013; the fiscal year 2013 budget for the Cooke County Adult Probation Department; road oil bid specs for MC-250, MC-800, and MC-3000 for a six month period beginning Aug. 13, 2012, plus related advertising; a subscription plan agreement with West Law for the 235th District Court; acceptance of a monetary donation in the amount of $55,000 for the paving of county roads 158 and 159.
