Conservative activist visits Gainesville

Gainesville — A prominent conservative visited Thursday’s monthly Cooke County Republican Women’s meeting in Gainesville and offered a call to Constitutional action.

Pastor Stephen Broden, a Tea Party advocate, urged meeting attendees to consider the nation’s future.

He offered advice that citizens be prepared for what he sees as a governmental shift toward socialism and autocracy.

Broden, citing the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, criticized the governmental approach of President Barack Obama and the formation of regulatory agencies that he feels impinge on freedoms.

The pastor said too many current politicians — on both partisan sides — approach the Constitution as if it is malleable and subject to random change.

He also said Americans may soon find themselves in a position to use weapons for more than just “squirrels and ducks.”

“Tyranny comes from the government, and if you don’t have guns, you are vulnerable,” he said Thursday. “Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, Ho Chi Minh, you name them, North Korea. All of those despots? The first thing they did was to take the guns.”

According to information from the National Black Pro-Life Coalition, Broden is the founder and current senior pastor of Fair Park Bible Fellowship, a non-denominational inner-city church in Dallas.

He is the current president of the Fair Park Friendship Center, a community-centered gathering place for groups such as the Boy Scouts and the Girl’s Club, and a community resource center offering hands-on assistance to surrounding area families.

Recently, he ran for U.S. Congress in the Texas 30th Congressional District in 2010.

He reportedly felt compelled to run because of a deep concern he had over the direction he feels America is taking: away from Constitutional principles that were the genesis of the country and toward a form of Western European socialism.

Broden has appeared in numerous national television and radio talk shows as a speaker on the moral, economic and spiritual impact that abortion is having in the African-American community. He has been a leader in the African-American pro-life movement for decades and received the Pro-Life Recognition Award from the National Pro-Life Religious Council for continuous leadership in the cause of life on Jan. 24, 2011.
