Two jailed connection with assault

Gainesville — Law enforcement officials have released names and details in connection with Sunday’s stabbing incident on East Highway 82.

Gainesville Police Department Sgt. Bobby Balthrop reported that shortly after 12:40 a.m. Sunday, police officers responded to a call from the premises of The Rodeo Bar at 2208 E. Highway 82 in reference to an alleged stabbing.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that victim Gary Mayfield, 20, had received stab wounds during an altercation inside the establishment.

The victim was flown by CareFlite to a Metroplex hospital and was said to be in stable condition.

The alleged suspects are Kenneth Paul Martinez, 17, and Ryan Walter Medina, 29, who both face charges of engaging in organized criminal activity. The suspects are currently in holding at the Cooke County Justice Center, and Martinez will reportedly be tried as an adult.

Belva McClinton, the police department’s public information officer, said the incident remains under investigation and that updates on Mayfield’s status were unknown Tuesday afternoon.

But Balthrop added in his report that anyone with information about this criminal case — or any other — is urged to contact the police department at (940) 668-7777.

Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact the local Crime Tips Hotline at (940) 612-0000.
