Council considers speed limit change

Gainesville — Members of Gainesville City Council approved the first reading of a speed limit ordinance during Tuesday’s regular meeting.

The ordinance sets a maximum speed limit of 40 miles per hour on FM 2071 (Old Denton Road) from FM 372 (Anthony Street) to the southern city limits, which is a distance of 0.212 miles.  Representatives of the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) recommended the speed limit and requested the city ordinance as a result of their traffic study of the state highway in this area.

During Tuesday’s meeting, councilmember Beverly Snuggs questioned the increased speed limit in a residential area and requested that TxDOT provide additional information at the next city council meeting.

Other meeting highlights:

• Council members approved the appointment of Clyde Yeatts to the Greater Texoma Utility Authority Board (GTUA) of Directors for a two-year term through Dec. 31, 2014.

• Council members authorized a two-year lease purchase of a wheel excavator for the city’s stormwater drainage division.

City Manager Barry Sullivan and staff recommended purchase of the Caterpillar wheel excavator through a lease purchase with Community Leasing Partners at 2.97 percent interest and two annual payments.

The city will provide a down payment of $66,667 from current year funds budgeted in stormwater drainage.  The first lease payment will be due February 2014.
