"Sounds of NCTC" to feature Disney favorites

Gainesville — The annual “Sounds of NCTC” concert, scheduled for March 22, is sure to be fun for all ages.

This year’s show will feature several Disney songs performed by the College Singers and the NCTC Jazz Band.

Sounds of NCTC is set for 7:30 p.m., on Friday, March 22 at the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts on the NCTC Gainesville campus.

According to Shane Studdard, an NCTC music instructor and director of the College Singers, concert-goers will recognize just about every song.

“The first part of the program by the College Singers will include a huge variety of really treasured songs that anybody will recognize, all the way from “Pinocchio,” “Snow White” up to their most recent hit, “Tangled,” he said. “It will feature our students with solos, duets and the whole choral ensemble.”

Then the audience will be treated to the NCTC Jazz Band, under the direction of Marty Kobuck.

“Although they are featuring a couple of Disney tunes, they are going to branch out and do some modern jazz and some classic jazz,” Studdard said. “Their part will also feature some students doing vocal solos. That’s kind of unusual. I’m not sure when that has been done in the past. Marty has featured some semi-professional guest soloists, but these will be our students singing with the jazz band. I’ve heard a little bit of it and it’s pretty terrific.”

Then, the College Singers will return to the stage to finish the program with selections from Disney’s biggest all-time hit, “The Lion King.”

“That scene is going to be pretty spectacular with special costumes, set pieces and lights,” Studdard said.

The concert, which is family-friendly and should last just over an hour, also raises money for scholarships.

“It’s important because not only is it an opportunity to feature a huge variety of our students in concert, it also is key to our scholarship program,” Studdard said. “All of the proceeds from this concert go to scholarships.”

Later this spring, the jazz band will have their own spring concert, as will the College Singers.

Tickets for Sounds of NCTC are $10 with NCTC students admitted free. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling the box office at 940-668-3355. Tickets may also be purchased at the door the night of the concert.
