Commish rodeo proclamation

Cooke County Judge John Roane issued a proclamation citing July 21-28 as “Rodeo Gainesville Week.” Gainesville Riding Club members, from left, Debbie Sicking, Jane Martin and Paige Dill attended Monday’s regular commissioners’ court meeting and received a copy of the proclamation, which promotes Rodeo Gainesville. Events are set for Friday and Saturday at Gainesville Riding Club.

County commissioners declined imposing a burn ban during Monday’s regular meeting.

Opinions were divided among officials about the ban — which was suggested by Fire Marshal Ray Fletcher and would have included a set of outdoor burning restrictions. Commissioners Gary Hollowell, Al Smith, B.C. Lemons and Leon Klement declined to vote for it.

But County Judge John Roane, a Valley View resident, recommended the ban and cited declining moisture in certain spots of the county.

“From the feedback I’ve gotten from people in the community, there are some parts of the community that are extremely dry,” he said. “And when we go into a burn ban, it affects the whole community and not just select areas. With that rationale, I suggest a burn ban.”

Officials took no action on the ban, but the agenda item will be part of the next regular meeting.

Other meeting highlights:
