Sponsored by the North Texas Medical Center (NTMC), a back-to-school “Wellness Event” took place Saturday at the Gainesville Civic Center with over 40 local organizations on hand providing information to local school bound children and their parents.
The Cooke County medical center provided back-to-school physicals and the Texas Department of State Health Services provided immunizations.
Diabetic screenings and scoliosis screenings were done and the Gainesville Lions Club was on hand doing vision screenings with the new hand held Spot Vision device which can check the vision of children as young as six months.
Representatives of The Cooke County EMS, Gainesville Fire- Rescue and the Gainesville Police Department provided safety information to both kids and parents.
Blood donations were received by the Carter Bloodcare bus stationed at the Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. With the event titled “Roll Up Your Sleeves & Give,” NTMC stated that 15 units of blood can save up to 45 lives in the community.
Representatives with information on community assistance programs, childcare programs, mentoring programs, youth programs, Boys and Girls Club, 4H, Cub Scouts, information about healthy lunches and snacks, fun fitness activities, pet therapy and Vials of Life provided quick information to parents.
Gayla Blanton, NTMC director of marketing, said that the event was a big success.
“What a great event,” Blanton said. “We are very pleased with the turnout and estimate that 300 to 350 were in attendance.”
