Four Gainesville High School students competed at the State CX debate contest March 15-17 in Austin. GHS teams placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the District 9 competition in February, sweeping the competition and taking both State qualifying spots to Austin.
Previously placing first in District, the Senior CX debate team of Dalton Chancellor and Mark Chavez advanced to Day 2 of the competition, the quarterfinals), on a 3-0 decision by the judges, followed by a 2-1 judge decision, which did not advance the team to semifinals. The quarterfinal finish placed the team in the top eight in state, which is a new record for Gainesville High School CX debate.
The junior team of Dillon Edington and Matilin Rigsby also competed at state after a second place District finish. Team Edington and Rigsby went 3 and 1 on Day 1 of the competition, but lost on speaker points to break a tie, which determined advancement to quarterfinals.
