Gainesville Independent School District is once again offering free meals to kids and teens this summer.
Healthy meals will be served Monday through Friday, June 3-28, at Edison Elementary School, Gainesville Junior High School and Gainesville High School, according to Robin Sorrell with the GISD food service department. A mobile site will serve meals June 10 through Aug. 2.
Breakfast will be available at the schools from 7:30-8 a.m. and lunch will be served there from 11:30 a.m. until noon, according to Sorrell.
The mobile site will serve meals daily beginning June 10 at Bella Vista Apartment Homes, 1000 Bella Vista Drive, and at Pecan Creek Park, 600 E. Pecan St.
Lunches will be available through the mobile unit from 11-11:30 a.m. at Bella Vista Apartment Homes and from 11:35 a.m. to noon at Pecan Creek Park. It’ll also be Monday through Friday, except for July 4, Sorrell said.
Each year GISD sponsors free meals for kids and teens during summer break at area campuses as part of its Summer Feed program. A mobile unit was added to the mix last year in an effort to reach more children who might not be able to get to the free meal sites at Edison Elementary and Gainesville Junior High.
Some 950 additional meals were served by adding the mobile van, according to archived reports.
Gainesville ISD has offered the summer feeding program for 30 years. It’s funded by the Texas Department of Agriculture. For more information, call 940-668-3626 or visit summerfood.org.
