Back to school shoppers take notice, the Texas Tax-Free weekend is coming up Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Tax-Free weekend, Aug. 21-29 has been in effect for several years and many shoppers wait for that weekend to purchase their back to school items.

Payless Shoes manager Sue Eberhart of the Gainesville store said of the tax-free weekend business, “it’s like double the normal.”

“The majority of our tax-free weekend business is for small kids,” said Eberhart. “We measure their feet, fit them for shoes, and they like that.”

“They are getting ready for school,” said Eberhart. “Some are excited and some are not so excited. They all like new shoes though.”

Bealls store manager Joanie Raley said, “We’re expecting a crowd. We are opening early and staying open later.”

“It’s one of the big sale times,” said Raley. It’s probably as big as Christmas.”

Raley said the store is packed with backpacks, school uniforms and shoes for the sale.

Raley said their store also has a “send” service in their shoe department so if they run out of one size during the sale, the shoppers can purchase the shoes that day with the tax-free break and the shoes will be shipped to their home in 7-10 days.

Shopper Dawn Simmons of Saint Jo said that she is not going to do her shopping during tax-free weekend.

“I would pay more money than shop with all those people.” Simmons has two school-age kids in the third and eighth grade.

Shopper Sue Martin of Era said that she will do some shopping during the tax-free weekend for her grandson.

“You have to save every little bit that you can,” said Martin. “Normally, I do shop on tax-free weekend.

Raley said that it takes a lot of preparation to prepare the store for the tax-free weekend.

“We get in tons of freight that has to be worked and put out on the floor so it’s ready for the tax-free event.”

Raley said that the basic items especially need to be in stock, like socks and underwear.

Raley said her advice to shoppers over the tax-free weekend is, “Just come with a wonderful attitude and just know you may need to wait in line. Come with a good attitude and make it fun.”
