Carrying a 45-pound cross on wheels, Acie Burleson, 34, makes his way west on U.S. 82 just west of Farm-to-Market Road 371 on a monthslong journey he began in his hometown of Andrews, South Carolina. He is aiming to reach the Grand Canyon and has no support crew for the journey, relying instead on “random people helping,” he said.

“God called me out to do this a long time ago,” he explained. “He gave me a message, and that message was to tell people to pray and be ready for the coming of Christ.”

He relies on people along the way to provide lodging, food and clean clothing, and stayed Wednesday night at Victorian Inn in Whitesboro. He was headed to meet someone in Gainesville who’d provide lodging Thursday night.

Burleson said he wasn’t sure which direction he’d be heading out from Gainesville on Thursday.

His wife and four children remain in South Carolina, where he said he had bills paid up before he left March 11.
