He left town rather quickly and quietly.

Matt Quick, formerly the Gainesville Municipal Airport manager, recently started a new job as a consultant for an airport planning firm near his home town in Missouri.

Gainesville city leaders are reviewing candidates for the position, as well as for the vacant economic development coordinator job.

Quick, 27, said he had no particular reason for the departure but thought it would be an opportunity to work closer to family members who live north of Kansas City, Mo.

He and his wife are from Oregon, Mo., north of Kansas City. Together they have a 16-month-old daughter.

“I’m still learning the ropes. Last week was my first week on the job,” Quick said in a telephone interview this morning about his job with Kansas City-based Kaufman Associates.

Quick said he has a bachelor’s degree in aviation technology with an emphasis in management, and took many classes in airport planning, which lends itself to his new position.

He said he gave notice of his intention to leave the airport manager position in June to City Manager Mike Land.

“He did a great job,” said City Manager Mike Land in passing Thursday.

Quick said about leaving that he “didn’t want to make a big deal out of it,” though a small party was held in his honor at the airport terminal.

He had been airport manager since June 2002.

“My stay there was good. I enjoyed the experience and the people,” Quick said.

He said his fondest accomplishment was the capital improvement project and the 6,000-foot runway extension.

“They had the design and engineering processes in place, but we saw it through with the construction and everything else,” he said.

He said his former position at the Gainesville Airport was a significant career move, though one he considers himself fortunate to have had.

“They’ve had good managers all the way through,” he said. “ I was lucky enough to slide into that position and carry it on.”

Land was not available for comment this morning on the progress of the search for a new airport manager.

The city of Gainesville may be reached at 668-4500 for information on open employment positions.
