Liberty Christian’s Whitney Hand is aptly named. The Lady Warriors volleyball player had a “hand” in just about every point as the Lady Warriors spoiled Gainesville’s season opener Tuesday at the Leopards Den.

Hand had numerous slams, dink shots (putting the ball softly over the net) and ace serves as the Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Leopards 25-20, 25-18, 25-19.

Gainesville had a great start in the opening game, of the best-of-five match, and had the game well in hand as the Lady Leopard took a 16-8 lead. However, the Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Leopards 16-4 the rest of the way to take command of the game and get the victory.

The Lady Leopards managed to push the lead to 18-12 before the Lady Warriors rallied.

Kristen Goodspeed’s ace serve started the Lady Warriors on their run and Hilary Bailey’s slam cut the lead to one point, at 19-18. After a Liberty Christian return fell in, the game was tied at 19-19.

Hand had a block that fell back over the net to up the Lady Warriors lead to 23-19 and the Lady Warriors went on for the victory.

In the second game, with Leah Sanchez and Jordy Phyffer leading the way, the Lady Leopards stayed close as the score inched toward 20.

Hand’s slam put the Lady Warriors ahead 13-12 and another strong return put the Lady Warriors up 18-16. Hand’s block put the Lady Warriors ahead 24-18 and the Lady Warriors won on the next serve.

Though the Lady Leopards were down 2-0, they were certainly not out as Laci Felderhoff, Lauren Kirchoff, Channing Ward, Lenzi Marshall, Jaci Felderhoff and Kaitlyn Culbertson joined Phyffer and Sanchez to make a game of it during the third match.

Sanchez’s block put the Lady Leopards up 11-8 and Gainesville battled the rest of the way. But Hand and her teammates had the right combination and slowly built the lead until they took the final game.
