The Callisburg Lady Cats continue their historic march through the 2A Region II playoffs, defeating Bruceville-Eddy 5-4 on Saturday, wrapping up the best-of-three series 2-0.
Taylor Ramsey pitched a gem once again, and had a couple of hits at the plate to help her cause.
But it was the pop of the bat by third baseman Lydia Hardcastle that sparked the Lady Cats in grand fashion.
With the bases loaded and just one out, Hardcastle stepped up to the plate and belted a grand slam over the fence in left-center field to extend a 1-0 lead in the third inning to 5-0 — all the runs Callisburg would need for the win.
Callisburg (32-6-1) was aggressive with the bat from the get go as Kenzie Pringle singled on the first pitch of the game.
The Lady Cats had two runners in scoring position just six pitches into the first inning. However, neither team would score until the third.
After two walks and a single, the Lady Cats got their first run off a fielding error to take an early 1-0 lead, then Hardcastle followed with her big time home run.
Bruceville-Eddy finally got on the board in the sixth with a two-RBI double from freshman shortstop Shelby Friudenberg making the score 5-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bruceville plated two more runs to cut the lead to 5-4.
With 2 outs and the crowd on the edge of their seats, Bruceville had the tying run on first base, but it was Ramsey who came up big, striking out the final Lady Eagle batter to the end the game and move the Lady Cats into the 2A Region II finals.
To help sweep the Lady Eagles, Callisburg won a weather-delayed affair 1-0 on Friday night.
The Lady Cats will take on Wichita Falls City View later this week. The time, date and venue were not known as of press time today.
