The Gainesville Leopards picked up their first district win of 2011 after edging the Pilot Point Bearcats Tuesday afternoon 8-6.
Cason Presson got the win on the mound for the Leopards after pitching 51/3 innings, allowing just 4 runs and striking out 5. Chance Sikes picked up the save in relief, throwing the final 12/3 innings of the game.
“This was a great team win, we played excellent defense throughout the game,” Gainesville coach Brandon Henegar said. “Both pitchers did a good job keeping Pilot Point hitters off balance.”
Dakota NIchols led off Gainesville’s scoring with a 2-run homer in the top of the first for an early 2-0 lead and never looked back.
Also recording RBIs in the win for Gainesville (7-15, 1-6 District 9-3A) were Kielyn Lewis, Presson, Cody Welch and Justin Hughes. Denzel Johnson also chipped in with 2 hits.
“On offense, we put the ball in play and had some very timely hitting that put runs on the scoreboard,” Henegar added. “This was a good team win. I am very proud of how our team competed and took advantage of their opportunities. After losing a close game 3-2 to Whitesboro last Friday night, we bounced back and played even better.”
The Leopards have a tough task ahead of them when they return home Friday, hosting No. 5 Argyle at Locke Field. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
