The Gainesville Lady Leopards have struggled in district play so far and despite falling 62-49 to Anna on Friday, Jan. 25 at Gainesville High School, they showed spurts of greatness.

The Lady Leopards had an 18-11 lead at one points, but one poor stretch of play led to a quick run by Anna, which was the deciding factor in the game.

Anna used a 19-3 run to claim a 30-22 lead at halftime on the way to the victory.

Gainesville head coach Shaun Weaver said she saw many positive takeaways from the game.

“Before the game we just talked about letting the crowd see the team we’ve seen at the beginning of the year and in tournaments,” Weaver said. “We just had to stick together as a team and that’s what they did. I think we were more mentality strong of at the beginning, just playing as a team, like moving the ball, attacking them when we can and not taking bad shots. We got the ball to the open girl which made the defense have to pick and choose.”

MeMe Davis led the team with 33 points while Alexis Henry added eight points along with Karina Ortiz’s four points.

Weaver said she noticed an up-beat team all night that stayed positive.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to instill in this program and I think it’s starting to click,” Weaver said. “We may backslide just a little bit but they know what it feels like. We don’t depend on one person and that’s what I told him after the game. Everybody did their job. We didn’t put the team on MeMe. We used her strength along with getting rebounds, getting defensive stop and we shared the ball tonight.”

Gainesville was outscored 23-17 in the third quarter, but they outscored Anna 10-9 in the final quarter.
