Second to none

The Gainesville junior varsity and freshman squads each competed in the Aubrey volleyball tournament this past weekend. Both teams faced tough North Lamar squads in the title game, losing out in each match after winning the first game. Shown above is the GHS freshmen, who placed second.

The Gainesville Lady Leopards freshman volleyball team continues to roll through its early season schedule.

The ninth-grade version of the Lady Leopards competed in the Aubrey Tournament this past weekend, coming away with another second-place finish — the second time this season the freshmen have placed second in a tournament.

The Lady Leopards defeated Pilot Point 25-14, 25-18 then Aubrey 25-12, 25-12. The Gainesville Lady Leopards then punched their way into the championship game by defeating Gunter for the second time this season 25-20, 25-20.

Gainesville (8-2) faced North Lamar in the championship match, going up 25-18 in the first game of the best-of-three series.

But North Lamar rallied, winning the final two games 25-19, 15-5 to take the championship.

The Gainesville JV also played well in the tournament, finishing second in the consolation bracket.

The JV Lady Leopards lost to Pilot Point, 25-14, 25-18, then beat Sanger 25-13, 25-15 before having to face Pilot Point again.

Gainesville defeated the Lady Cats, 25-18, 25-19 to make it to the consolation championship match.

The JV also faced North Lamar and also won the first game.

After falling behind 6-0, the Lady Leopards rallied to win 25-21 in Game 1. But North Lamar rallied in Game 2 (25-16) and Game 3 (15-12) to win the tournament.
